Dealing with Dragon Loon CC
(Applicable to TH9 and TH8s)

- tutorial by Eddy 2.0

With the shift to non-poisonable defensive CC troops, there is a high likelihood your enemy CC will contain a dragon.  After reviewing failed attacks in the past few wars, I've calculated that over 50% of our failed war attacks were due to improperly handling the enemy war CC (most of these were non-lured shattered attacks).  While it is very possible to successfully execute non-lured attacks, if the CC is easily lurable (e.g. by 3 hogs or less), you should seize the opportunity to greatly increase your chances of a success attack.

I've lured the CC, now how do I kill the dragon and loons?  In the past, many of us dealt with a lured cc using the standard 212 for th9s (2 witches, 1 wizard, 2 barbs), or a 201 for TH8s.  Now that we don't have to worry about CC witches and archers (just use poison if you encounter them), you can carry a lighter CC-kill squad.  This technique is nothing new, and predates the use of 212.  But it in case anyone needs a refresher, here is a tutorial.

Troop composition:

  • 4 Archers

  • 6 Barbarians

  • 3 Wizards

  • (Optional) Archer Queen

Once you get efficient with killing CC drags, you can take less barch troops, and save your AQ.

TH9 Example

Trigger the CC.  The number of troops required to trigger will depend on the base. Dragons/Loons don't take long to come out of the CC, so you only need to be within CC range for a couple seconds.  Sometimes this is easily done with 1 giant.  Othertimes it requires several hogs.  Here, mc jr uses a total of 6 hogs to take down two defenses and trigger the CC.

Next, lure the CC to a corner using an archer to anchor.  If all trash buildings are within range of defenses, you may need to lure with several barbs instead (one at a time).

Send a distraction barb first, then surround the dragon with several archers.  (Below, mc jr here omits the initial barb)

The key is to continually send in a distraction barb to protect your wizards, a new barb as the previous one is about to die.  Back up your archers with 3 wizards as you keep up your distraction barbs.

You can place your AQ down as additional backup if needed.  Otherwise, you can save her for your CB/shatter.

Now you can start the CB or shatter portion of your raid.  The mini squad that just took out the CC usually helps with the funnel creation, to create a nice path for your BK to go straight towards enemy AQ.

TH8 Example

Try to take out a defense while luring.  Typically this requires 3-4 hogs.

Anchor in a corner with an archer.  I usually let my archer die by dragon fire.  Then let out two distraction barbs, surround by archers and 3 wizards.  Continue to send in a distraction barb as the previous one is about to die.
